Pearl GTL, Shell, Qatar

  • Project - Pearl GTL, Shell, Qatar
  • Main Contractor - Al Jaber Transport and General Contracting

Project Outline

In July 2006, Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Royal Dutch Shell announced the launch of the world-scale integrated Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) project in Qatar.

The Pearl GTL project comprises the development of upstream gas production facilities as well as an onshore GTL plant that will produce 140,000 barrels per day (bpd) of GTL products as well as approximately 120,000 bpd of associated condensate and liquefied petroleum gas. The project will be developed in two phases with the first phase operational around the end of the decade. The second phase will be completed around one year later.  The project includes the development of a block within Qatar's vast North Field gas reserves, which will produce 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas.

This world-scale project allows the State of Qatar and Shell to work together to build a new industry, which will provide an alternative way to utilize Qatar’s enormous gas resources in an economically robust and environmentally constructive way.  The project demonstrates Shell’s commitment to help realise Qatar’s ambition to become the “GTL capital of the world”, and for Shell to remain a leader in the emerging GTL industry.

Scope of Works

Powershield designed, manufactured and shipped 7 no doors and 3 no windows to Powershield Fire Rated R1 Ballistic Doorsets, Powershield Fire Rated Blast 10 and R1 Ballistic Doorsets and Powershield R1/BR6 Ballistic Windows.

The Works

Doors were designed by Project Draughtsmen Graeme Devenney and Robert Galbraith, using AutoCAD 2002 with Mechanical Desktop version 6. Following the drawing approval process the construction information was downloaded to computer numerically controlled manufacturing equipment within the factory using CAD/CAM software.

The customer required high specification blast and ballistic steel doors for a prestigious petrochemical project in Qatar with specific hardware. Powershield were able to react quickly to changes to the specification of the doors and offer exactly what the client required.

Doors were manufactured, polyester powder coated and fitted with all-specialist hardware in-house prior to despatch to ensure a quality finished product arrived on site. Powershield had to become a Shell ‘Flawless’ Supplier.
