Aviva Stadium

- Project - Aviva Stadium
- Main Contractor- John Sisk & Son
- Architect - HOK Sport
Project Outline
The old Lansdowne Road stadium was in fact the oldest international rugby ground in the world. The stadium was best known as the home of the Irish International Rugby team, first opened as a multipurpose sports venue in 1872. Over the past 20 years it has also become home to Irish soccer.
The new stadium which replaces it has an all-seater capacity of 50,000. The strong contemporary design of the stadium comprises a continuous curvilinear-shaped stand, enclosing all four sides of the ground. ASSA ABLOY Security Doors received an order for supply and installation of Powershield steel doors from Main Contractor John Sisk & Son Ltd.
This project follows on from other successful Stadia jobs with Powershield doors installed, namely Croke Park Dublin, Emirates Stadium for Arsenal Football Club, Coventry Arena, and also the 02 Arena in both London and Dublin.
Scope of Works
Over 110 Powershield steel security doors were required for the exterior of the building, as well as some large glazed screens.
Structural openings were already formed, requiring narrow profile frames to accommodate clear opening dimensions, thus aiding the architect.
The Works
Highly specialised product for the project included a Powershield thermally-broken glazed door with side screens for the players tunnel entrance; Powershield double-action glazed fire doors; and large flush steel Powershield double doors incorporating specialist louver systems.
Other bespoke double steel doors included uniquely designed overhead screens with sloping tops, with overall dimensions up to 4.8m wide x 4.7m high while maintaining capability to resist crowd loading. These doors were pivoted using hold open/electromagnetic floor springs.
Every door on the project varied, carrying specific details for each unique opening and its position in the building. A specially designed deflection detail was incorporated into the doors, to allow for slab deflection but still maintain a rigid top fixing for fire screens.
All doors and screens were designed by Senior Draughtsman Peter Hourican. Doors and screens were finished with a polyester powder coated finish to corporate colours selected by the client.
Our directly-employed site team installed all doors and screens on site, with special handling equipment required to fit oversize doors such as the players entrance.
