02 Arena

  • Project - O2 Arena
  • Main Contractor - Sir Robert McAlpine
  • Architect - HOK Sport
  • Sub-Contract Value - £300,000

Project Outline

The new owners AEG Europe are transforming London’s landmark Millennium Dome in to a major entertainments facility. In the first year they plan to host 150 music, entertainment and sports events in the new 23,000 seat arena. The new venue will be known as the O2 Arena and will include other sports and leisure facilities including bars, cafés and restaurants.

The redevelopment valued at over £600million is being completed by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and is expected to be complete on time for the Arena’s first event, Bon Jovi concert on 24th June.

Scope of Works

Powershield designed, manufactured and installed over 250no doors including Powershield Personnel, Powershield Fire and Powershield Acoustic. Also included within the sub-contract works was the procurement and management of the roller shutter doors required.

The Works

Doors were designed by Project Draughtsman David Robinson using Autocad 2002 with Mechanical Desktop version 6 and Auto SM. Following the drawing approval process the construction information was seamlessly downloaded to computer numerically controlled manufacturing equipment within the factory using CAD/CAM software.

The architect had requested a consistent shadow gap between the door frames and the existing structural openings making it necessary to manufacture doors exactly to suit the project. Contract Manager Gareth Cranston conducted a complete and thorough survey of every opening on the project using laser measuring equipment. With Bluetooth integration between the measuring device and his PDA, dimensions could be taken and recorded quickly and accurately. The information could then be directly e-mailed to the drawing office to incorporate in the drawings.

Doors were manufactured, polyester powder coated and fitted with all hardware in-house prior to despatch to ensure a quality finished product arrived on site. Installation was then completed by one directly-employed fitting team on time and to the satisfaction of both main contractor and architect.
