ASSA ABLOY Security Doors cleared to land at Heathrow

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors cleared to land at Heathrow

07 December 2011

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors has won a contract to supply and install over 1,100 Powershield steel doors to Europe’s first ‘green’ terminal.

Terminal 2A at Heathrow Airport has been specially designed to comply with the most demanding sustainability standards and will use 40% less carbon than the existing Terminal 2.

Costing £1billion to construct, Terminal 2A will be built in two phases to service customers travelling on Star Alliance Airlines, with up to 20 million passengers expected to travel through the terminal each year. The Terminal 2A development includes the terminal building, associated satellite pier and a new cooling station and energy centre.

To help provide the highest level of security for the project, ASSA ABLOY Security Doors will supply Powershield acoustic, fire and security doors, some of which will have special laminated facings and stainless steel kick plates for added durability.

Powershield acoustic doors are specially insulated to control unwanted noise and have been independently tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140 pt 3 and calculated for sound reduction values under BS EN ISO 717-1. Powershield fire doors have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2000 and are accredited under the Certifire Compliance Scheme.

All double and leaf and half door sets installed in Terminal 2A will also include an integral overlapping astragal detail that is completely flush on the front of the door leaves This new detail provides an improved architectural appeal, while still maintaining the fire integrity on double leaf steel doors and the security features of an anti-jemmy edge.

Brian Sofley, Commercial Director for ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, said:

"As Europe's busiest airport, Heathrow requires a top specification, high security solution and we are looking forward to working closely with main contractor HETCo on the project.

"Internal fire doors are an essential safety feature within busy transport hubs like airports. Steel doors provide a higher level of fire protection than other materials and will prevent the spread of fire to protect passengers and staff, and create maximum evacuation time.

"The superior strength, durability and security of all the steel doors being supplied to this project, combined with their relatively low maintenance requirements make them an ideal choice for these high traffic areas."
